Minor City Officials
The minor city officials (kleine officieren)
Seldom from regent families, they were usually paid; the community trash supervisors (crebbemeesters), for example, were not.
Dozens of citizens were filling these positions: messengers, clergymen, teachers, public works inspectors, even those who kept watch at night from the city's towers. This category is closest to what today we call civil servants.
Most of Leeuwenhoek's city jobs fell into this category.
