A fellow of the Royal Society after 1677. Leeuwenhoek wrote three letters to him in the summer and fall of 1680 after Gale replaced Nehemiah Grew as one of the Royal Society's two secretaries.

Letter 32 of 1680-06-14 (AB 62)  was about spontaneous generation. Leeuwenhoek demonstrated that no living little animals originate in an infusion of pepper kept in a hermetically closed tube.
