The original manuscript on one quarto page, written and signed by Leeuwenhoek, is preserved at the Rijksarchief (National Archive) in Den Haag (Inv. No. 13). The letter was not published during his lifetime.

Leeuwenhoek wrote this short reply to his friend Anthonie Heinsius's Lost Letter L-139 of 8 October 1683, in which he offers his thanks for Leeuwenhoek's sending him the observations described in Leeuwenhoek's Letter L-135 of 17 September 1683. It was not published until 1952 in Volume 4 of Alle de Brieven / Collected Letters. Leeuwenhoek enclosed a copy made by clerk Adriaan Landsvelt of Letter L-128 of 16 July 1683 about male seed in egg yolks.
