Named in Middelhoek estate inventory as owing 1800 gulden

Date:
August 16, 1657

Leeuwenhoek borrowed this money from Pieter Zieres van Middelhoek (Middelhouck), a butcher. All the inventory item says is that it was 1800 gulden at 4% annual interest, that is, 72 gulden paid on 23 April every year. The loan probably helped Leeuwenhoek afford to pay off the mortgage on his house in such a short period of time. For the loan, he put up the Groenevelt as collateral. It was the house on the Oosteinde that he and his wife Barbara had inherited from her father in May 1655, so the loan was made in either April 1656 or April 1657.

The inventory also included a debt to Leeuwenhoek of 10 gulden for some cloth (laken).
