These four letters were all addressed to Henry Oldenburg. Hendrik van Someren translated them back into Dutch from Oldenburg's English translations in Philosophical Transactions. They were among the first 27 letters, which Leeuwenhoek did not self-publish, so Philosophical Transactions was van Someren's only source.
Six figures accompanied Letters 4 and 5, and van Someren published all of them.
